By John Paul Lee

Have you ever set foot in a gym, only to find an endless number of different cardio machines with no clue on where to even start? You'll find cardio machines ranging from elliptical to treadmills to stairclimbers and many more, but which cardio machines work the best in aiding your goal to lose weight without any complications? Before we begin, there are three main things that you should remember when choosing a cardio machine.

1. Pick a cardio machine that doesn't require much skill.
Cardio machines don't have to be high-tech or gimmicky so you would be better off with sticking to one that is simple and very easy to use. The ideal goal here is to find a cardio machine that is simplistic and mechanical in nature. That way your body will naturally move the way it would as if you're outdoors--walking or running.

2. Find a cardio machine that you're comfortable with and stick with it.
Our primary concern when working with a cardio machine is to minimize any risk of injury. It is important to keep your connective tissues and joints healthy throughout a cardio session. This also will reduce aggravation of any injuries you may have as well. Any form of injury, big or small, will put a halt on your weight loss progress and it is something we should avoid at all costs. Start with experimenting with different machines and see how your body responds. If it's comfortable to your taste then by all means stick with that machine. However, if you experience any discomfort, steer clear of it right away!

3. Keep your cardio sessions short and intense.
There are several reasons why it's important to keep a cardio session short and intense. You don't have to spend as much energy diverting your focus onto balancing yourself or maintaining a specific form throughout a cardio session. Imagine yourself running on a treadmill platform where space if pretty much limited compared to running on an open ground. That much of a difference will have an impact on your body and unnecessary energy wasted. Thus, it is better to aim for a few miles instead of running an hour long marathon.
Now that we have all three important criteria covered, I'd like to recommend the four best cardio machines that involve low impact exercise, going hand-in-hand with weight loss.

Recumbent Bike
The recumbent bike operates similar to the stationary bike but the difference is that your body is in a seated position. This machine is often recommended for those looking to reduce stress off their lower back which is a bonus for those who have nagging lower back problems from the past.

Stairclimber
This is one of my favorite cardio machines. A stairclimber involves low impact movements which helps you keep your focus and maintain the intensity without interrupting your flow. It's a nice replacement for those who cannot find stairs to walk on.

Treadmill
Treadmills are a great choice for those who prefer an interval style of training as a replacement for outdoor running. The platforms are professionally designed to reduce impacts on the joints. Plus, you have the option to control the difficulty level by either increasing or decreasing the speed and you can raise the platform to form an incline.

Upright Stationary Bike
If you're looking for a low impact exercise that'll help you maintain a high level of intensity without losing balance, this is the machine you're looking for. Both recumbent and upright stationary bikes are recommended for their ease of use because they are easily programmable to meet your standards.

To sum it up, these four machines are highly recommended due to their relative ease of use--and not to mention, they involve low impact exercises which is a plus for any existing injuries that you may have, easing the pain on your connective tissues and joints. Lastly, choose a cardio machine that is simple and straightforward so that it'll help YOU focus by picking a cardio machine that is simple and straightforward. This way, you can focus on high intensity training rather than focusing your attention on mechanics.
As a fundamental form of aerobic training, walking has numerous physical benefits for the heart, lungs, and circulatory system, while also increasing muscle tone and burning fat calories. Treadmills provide a convenient way to regularly exercise in all weather conditions in the comfort and safety of your own home. From beginners just starting an exercise regimen to advanced athletes looking to maintain their fitness level, anyone interested in getting and staying in shape can benefit greatly from regular use of a treadmill. Treadmills allow you to determine the pace, distance, and complexity of the workout based on your needs, all while watching television, talking on the telephone, or reading a magazine. Much easier on sensitive joints like the knees and hips, treadmill walking and running surfaces are typically long, padded platforms that allow ample room for a long stride and comfortable, low-impact walk or jog without the harsh contact of a concrete surface. While many different types, styles, and price ranges of treadmills exist, many of them offer unique features like a fold-up design for easy storage, an electronic display monitor showing speed, distance, workout time, incline level, and burned calories, and EKG grip pulses to monitor the heart rate while exercising. Regardless of the simple to complex features you may choose, treadmills offer an array of aerobic exercise opportunities that will provide long-lasting beneficial cardiovascular results without a commute to the gym or a jog in the rain. About Sole Sole brings over twenty years of treadmill and fitness product design and manufacturing to the table in their line of innovative equipment designed for fitness-conscious people.
Reviews

great treadmill! the best part is the red piece that comes out so my toddler can't turn it on! its perfect! i love the speakers and the multiple cup holders. its a great treadmill.

We're the predictable, classic case of buying a treadmill and then infrequently using it.

So for what it's worth, it's been perfect for the time we've used it over the course of a few years. Solidly constructed, feels sturdy, for the most part like one of the ones at pricey health clubs.

* I kinda enjoy the digital-ish display with the oval track, so you can pretend you're running laps.

* The music speakers and fans are pretty weak... but probably not a selling feature for you anyway.

Overall rock solid. Good times. I'll update this if the wifey has any problems with it after our baby, as it's likely to get more work after.

I purchased this from Dick's for about $100 cheaper.. So the velcro strap popped off when unpacking. It is not in a very awkward position and I have no idea how to get it down! It is quite hard trying to assemble it to see if any of the electronic options will put it back in an upright position.

Anyone else had this problem? Please help!

The Sole F63 was all that I expected and more. It is smooth running, quiet, feature laden and easy to use. It also supports programmed workouts. I agree with a previous reviewer on its only drawback...handles used for pulse measurement that are very low and uncomfortable. A minor complaint that is easily bypassed by using their harness to get pulse rate. It took about 45 minutes to assemble after being moved to the basement ...which requires three strong people...this piece is very heavy ! I highly recommend the Sole F63, it is a real bargain when one looks at proice versus capability and warranty.

I purchased this treadmill back in Nov 2009 after a diagnosis of type II Diabetes. I put it together without major hassel and I am not that mechanically inclined. Having a cordless drill with allen wrench bits helped a lot.

The treadmill works flawlessly. It is rather easy to transport and very easy to fold.

I've lost 40 pounds by walking on it and watching what I eat. I started at over 300 pounds and am down to around 260. It may not be the quietest (or as quiet as the F8x models) but I can hear the TV that I watch while walking.

My favorite program is the Interval Program (P5). It varies both speed and incline and provides a good workout. I also love the speed and incline adjustments on the arms of the treadmill.

My treadmill came with a chest strap heart rate monitor and it works well (although I had to lose some weight to get it to fit properly).

For under $1000 this is the best treadmill on the market!

Buying a home treadmill? Treadmills are still the most popular choice among exercise equipment buyers today. Why do many people invest in a home treadmill? Here are 7 major benefits of buying your own home treadmill:

1) Burn more calories:
Treadmills burn more calories per hour than any other exercise machine. A study by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that a vigorous workout on a treadmill burns around 700 calories, compared to 627 for stair climbers and 498 for stationary bikes.
Another study done by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee showed that calories burned on the treadmill for 60 minutes averaged 705 - 865, more than a stair machine, rowing machine or stationary bike.

2) Workout whenever you want:
With your own treadmill, you have the freedom to workout at any time of the day that you want. No waiting in the lines at the health club, no speeding to the gym to get in before 'the rush', no walking outside at night in the dark.

3) Wear whatever you want:
With a home treadmill you can wear whatever you want to workout. No worrying if your shorts match your T-shirt. No worrying if your shirt is too ragged or if your sweat pants are too loud.

4) Workout for as long as you want:
I don't know about you but I hate, hate, hate it when someone kicks me off the treadmill at the gym because my 'time is up'. With a home treadmill you have the freedom to go as long (or as little) as you want.

5) Get the body you've always wanted:
It's a fact: when it's convenient you'll exercise more. Which means you have the power to get the kind of body you've always wanted. Tighten those buns, tone those abs, say 'good bye' to that spare tire and 'hello' to a tiny waist with your own treadmill.

6) No more boredom:
How many times have you gone to the gym and been bored out of your mind within 10 minutes of your workout? With a home treadmill you can set it up in front of your TV and watch your favorite shows or movies.
Before you know it you'll have gone farther than you even realized - and burned more calories too. That means a better body in less time.

7) A simple way to exercise for those of us who aren't gym bunnies:
If you're not a muscle bound, 0% body fat gym bunny, a home treadmill is a simple, easy way to lose weight and stay in shape. Many people, for one reason or another, feel embarrassed by going to the gym. Consequently, they don't enjoy their gym workout and don't get the most out of it. Home treadmills are easy to use and simple to work for anyone, regardless of fitness level.

These are just a few benefits of owning your own home treadmill. Chances are you have your own reasons for wanting one.
Just remember that the seeds you sow today will be the rewards you reap tomorrow. Good luck and have fun!

By Annabelle Robertson
WebMD Feature
Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

You've probably used one at the gym and may even have one sitting in your spare bedroom. The treadmill, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association, is the top-selling piece of fitness equipment in the U.S. - and also the most popular among users.
"Treadmills are a fantastic alternative to outdoor workouts, particularly for people who feel a little unsure about being outside," says Therese Iknoian, author of Fitness Walking and editor-in-chief of SNEWS, a fitness news service.
"They're a safe, secure, controlled environment. The treadmill allows you to stop when you need to. You can control the hills, you can control the speed," Iknoian tells WebMD
But many people find the treadmill boring, or wonder if they're getting the most out of their treadmill time.
If that's you, relax. Treadmill workouts don't have to be dull. In fact, they can be one of the most efficient, challenging, calorie-burning routines around -- indoors or out.
The key: intervals. Instead of trudging along a steady pace, you'll mix up your speed, and get off the treadmill every few minutes to do exercises on the floor.
Intervals on the Treadmill
Intervals keep boredom at bay and keep the heart pumping, says Cindy Wasilewski, fitness manager at The Lodge at Wooloch, a destination spa in Hawley, Pa.
"You get people working at a maximum intensity level on the treadmill, and you keep things moving with interval training," Wasilewski tells WebMD. "Doing the interval[s] is the best workout that there is to keep your heart rate up and burn the most calories.
Intervals also lend intensity to treadmill classes at the Blast900 gym in Atlanta, where fitness director Jeff Baird says exercisers burn at least 900 calories in an hour.
Blast900's boot-camp style workouts alternate 10 minutes of walking, jogging, or running with 10 minutes of weight training and floor exercises. While some students are on the treadmills, others are on the floor, sweating it out. Then they switch.
"We have housewives working out next to professional athletes, and the reason for that is the treadmill," Baird says. "There are three different intensity levels: runner, jogger, walker, [and] the treadmill allows us to really quantify the intensity. We use different [speeds] for each, and we can really tell how hard people are working."
Easier Than Running Outside?
It's important to keep track of how hard you're working on a treadmill, given that treadmill running is somewhat easier than running outside.
"When someone is on a treadmill, he or she doesn't have to fight air resistance or wind to move forward," Iknoian says. "If you don't have to overcome any resistance to go forward, logically then you aren't working as hard.”
But if you're pushing yourself on the treadmill, you may work out longer. On the treadmill, "you have to make a really distinct effort to go slower by pushing the button," Iknoian says. "It's not like you're outside, where all you have to do is slow down.
Wasilewski and Baird shared several treadmill workouts with WebMD, including routines for people who have an hour, 30 minutes, or only 20 minutes to devote to exercise.
Besides a treadmill, you'll need hand weights and a stability ball for the floor exercises. As always, check with your doctor before you start a new exercise program.
60-Minute Treadmill Workouts
If you've got an hour, here are two different treadmill workouts to try. Wasilewski, who designed both workouts, calls the first one the "No Excuses" routine because it delivers maximum results for the time investment. The second workout is an interval trek, designed to boost cardiovascular endurance.
The Perceived Exertion rate referenced in these workouts is a scale of 0-10 used to measure the intensity of exercise. For example, 0 (nothing at all) is how you feel when at rest, while 10 (very, very heavy) is how you feel after extremely strenuous exercise.
No-Excuses Routine
Start on the treadmill:
Time Intensity/Speed Incline Perceived Exertion
5 min. 3.5 mph - warm-up 1% Level 2-3
1 min. 4.5 - speed walk/run 6% Level 6
2 min. 3.5 - walk/slow jog 4% Level 4
1 min. 4.5 - speed walk/ run 6% Level 6-7
2 min. 3.5 - walk/slow jog 4% Level 4
1 min. 4.5 - speed walk/run 6% Level 7
2 min. 3.5 - walk/ slow jog 4% Level 4
1 min. Slowly take it down to stop 1% Level 2-3
Move to the floor:
• Do one set of 30 overhead shoulder presses with dumbbells while alternating squats.
• Done one set of 30 bicep curls with dumbbells while alternating lunges.
Return to the treadmill:
Time Intensity/Speed Incline Perceived Exertion
1 min. 3.5 - walk/slow jog 4% Level 4
1 min. 4.5 - speed walk/ run 6% Level 6-7
1 min. 3.5 - walk/slow jog 4% Level 4
1 min. 4.5 - speed walk/run 6% Level 7
1 min. 3.5 - walk/ slow jog 4% Level 4
Slow down gradually before you stop.
Finish on the floor:
• Do one set of 30 chest presses with hand weights on a stability ball (hips in air).
• Do set of 30 reverse flies with hand weights on a stability ball (hips in air).
• Stretch.
Interval Treadmill Trek:
Start on treadmill:
Time Intensity/Speed Incline Perceived Exertion
The company's treadmill line is simple in design, with an emphasis on quality and warranty all at a great price. Sole's easy-to-use treadmills offer a great value and feature a convenient, space-saving portable design.
Reviews

First treadmill I have bought but not the first I have jogged on. The box is huge and you will deff need someone to help you if you plan to move it before assembly. I have had it for two days so cant say much but its quiet and has alot of options and has incline wich is something big that I wanted. Well built and mad heavy but easy to move around when folded. Was easy to put together just watch the wires other then that a piece of cake. Has alot of room for mp3 player and bottles. If you want to get off your butt and move this is a good choice.

We have only had this treadmill for a few weeks but are very pleased with its performance. It was delivered into our garage and, since it is very heavy, we decided to set it up and use it in the garage. Set up was quick and easy. Four people use it daily and we have not encountered any problems with the unit. It is well constructed for its main purpose. The speakers are a little wimpy and the fans need to be supplemented by larger house fans for some users. For the price this treadmill appears to be very suitable for home use and if anything does go wrong the warrenties on the components refect the manufacturer's confidence in the product.

This treadmill is heavy and sturdy but the easy lift mechanism allows me to fold it and roll it with ease. And the same mechanism lowers the treadmill back into position gently. This was very important as I am 62 years old and arthritic--I did not need something I had to wrestle with. I was able to put the treadmill together by myself--easy to follow instructions. I did have some problems with the very small tools provided--not a long enough grip for me to get leverage so I had to improvise.
I have used the treadmill for a week now and I love the ease of use. It is quiet and smooth. Transitions from start to movement and back to stop are gentle with no abrupt bumping. Digital display is clear, easy to see, with buttons in convenient locations. Buttons for elevation and speed are also located on the hand rails.
I am very happy I bought this treadmill from Amazon--and the free shipping was a plus.

Delivery/Purchase
I would highly recommend to go with "Inside Delivery" as the size and weight of the box makes it extremely difficult to move. I had to take the treadmill base out of the box and have two men carry my F80 downstairs into my basement (not included in my ABF delivery since we had to take it out of the box to fit the doorway however they will take it down stairs if they can get the box through). I purchased my treadmill through Sports Authority who routinely offers free inside delivery (and who in turn has Sole ship it direct to you so hard to beat). I saved $150 off the F80 by using my Discover Card through the ShopDiscover online link for Sports Authority (10% off purchase), just something to keep in mind for anyone considering.

Assembly/Installation
Assembly was very simple, quick and relatively easy - I definitely would not pay anyone to do this for me. It does help to have two people do the part where the arm covers clamp on since this can be tricky to not pinch any wires. One note that I haven't seen anyone really point out clearly is that this treadmill must not run off a GFCI. The manual clearly states that, and it's something I was aware of but thought maybe it would work anyway...not in my case. The treadmill would trip the GFCI every time it would go to start. It was a simple fix to replace the GFCI but just be aware of this as it may affect where you choose to put your treadmill.

Treadmill Predefined Programs/Features
The treadmill itself is very sturdy and has some nice features (quick speed/incline keys in increments of 2, iPod plug-in, storage wells on each side of console). In reading through the reviews I didn't see many people who had actually used the predefined workouts. I have used quite a few of them already, and they are excellent! You can download a PDF on Sole's website that contains the details of every one and how they are influenced by maximum top speed that you set and length of time for the program that you set. I personally use the Fatburn, Hill, Cardio, Interval and Strength programs but look forward to the user defined ones as well (two can be programmed). I briefly tried the heart rate programs that work with the wireless monitor but since I was just starting out, I had a hard time completing them.

I didn't think I would use the predefined programs but so far they have been great because they challenge you to push yourself harder in terms of varying inclines and speeds. I find myself telling the treadmill to "Bring it on!" when it gently beeps that it's going to adjust the incline or speed throughout the program (which is nice). There are also displays that show you what is coming up for speed or incline changes in the next sections of the program which is great. Another thing I didn't see in reviews is that there is a warm-up and cool-down with each program. You can easily bypass it if you like, but they did add three minutes on each side of the program for this. My only minor "complaint" with the predefined programs is that they seemed to have included a warm-up/cool-down inside the program itself to some extent and now you have another warm-up/cool-down before/after the program officially starts/ends. It almost seems like they recently added the separate warm-up/cool-down feature to the F80 but didn't alter their pre-existing programs to remove this. You can adjust around it by increasing the duration or intensity (max speed) for the program and then bypassing the separate ones so no big deal but strikes me as odd. I find myself having to increase the intensity within the predefined programs at the beginning and end if I don't do this.

Wireless Heart Monitor
The wireless heart rate monitor is great, and I can't imagine not having it. I didn't honestly think I would use it, but it's great and for me has been very accurate. You do need to read the directions with the monitor that says to place it underneath the pectorals and to wet the monitor sensors. I have never had a problem with it being off since I have started doing this.

Treadmill Usage
There is a slight delay between speed/incline changes (~5 seconds), but I find this helpful because it allows me to adjust and prepare. The incline changes are subtle and smooth. I personally think the speakers are good and don't understand all the fuss about them. I use them with my iPod, and it works great, beats headphones. I also like the fans but agree that they are not overwhelming...provides a subtle path of air which is all I really need since I'm using the treadmill in my cool basement. There is a small ledge on the console for a book or magazine. I have been able to set my video iPod up on the ledge and watch my favorite TV shows while broadcasting the audio through the speakers...pretty nice setup. It doesn't vibrate or fall off since the ledge goes back far enough.

My only reservation with the Sole F80 is what I would call a slight whine/hum at speeds lower than 2.0mph. I sometimes only notice it between 1.0 - 2.0, almost always at 2.0mph. It sounds like a motor whine like it's dragging/laboring but after it increases a little bit, the sound goes away. Another reviewer mentioned this as well, and I kind of wondered about it but nothing appears to be off as everything is lubed and the belt is centered. There must just be something around 2.0mph that does it.

I am very happy with my purchase as it was a lot of money to spend so good to know that the product is worth it. I have been using it every day for half and hour for two weeks and have dropped 5 lbs so far. More importantly the Sole F80 seems like something that I will be able to continue to use toward my weight loss goals and on-going maintenance. I find that I look forward to using it, and the features it provides. I'm glad I purchased the F80 over the F63 because I find myself running more and more on my treadmill which I had not intended to do. I always thought I would power walk but with the heart monitor, I found that after two weeks my body had adapted to the challenge even with various incline changes so I needed the boost of running to get my heart rate back up to where it needs to be throughout my session. The Sole F80 should be all I need for a long time.

Superb machine. I concur w/ all the five-star reviews. Half the price, double the quality. It's a beast for the $$. Regarding those "low speed" errors you may read about: I had the same. I called Sole Hdq. in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and spoke w/ two techs who have worked on them for many years. 1) Could be the speed sensor, but that's a slim chance. 2) It was my error. When you assemble the right hand rail, be cautious not to crimp the wiring harness. This is exactly the problem. It's heavy steel and kind of difficult to handle by yourself - it's easy to crimp that harness. This one's a keeper for many years.

By PETER L. KNUDSON
Published: Friday, February 05, 2010

The new semester is upon us; new classes, new notebooks, new opportunities. The stress of the end of the fall semester has been abated, and Harvard students are looking forward to a fresh start. Ambitions are high, and the concept of taking that fifth class seems all too doable. However, it will be only a matter of time until the stress of problem sets and midterm exams build up. The typical Harvard student reacts to the stress by working even harder, pulling all nighters in Lamont, or doing painful cram sessions. However, this semester, students might find that the key to surviving the stressful times can be found on a MAC treadmill, rather than a Widener carousel.

The relationship between body and mind is no secret; a healthy body produces a healthy mind. Therefore, during periods of high stress, such as midterm seasons and reading week, Harvard students need to spend more time doing physical activity. While the physical benefits of exercise are more or less widely know, it is easy to overlook the mental benefits.

According to research done at University of Colorado at Boulder, exercise has been proven to prevent the development of depression anxiety, among other stress-related disorders. In the experiment, lab rats were exposed to a stressor, and those that had been allowed to exercise had increased levels of serotonin, the chemical that regulates mood, and were shown to be less anxious and stressed than the rats that were not allowed to exercise. Exercise, in a sense, is a natural antidepressant. Other scientific research has also shown that exercise increases the development and maintenance of brain cells, as well as the hippocampus, the part of the brain necessary for memory.

If staying happy and sharp wasn’t enough reason to exercise, Harvard students should be aware of the benefit to their immune system. Moderate exercise has also proven to increase immunity. According to Mary P. Miles, Ph.D., an associate professor of exercise sciences at Montana State University, the risk of being infected with the flu virus or a cold will drop with moderate exercise. Another study, done at Appalachian State, found that those who walked at moderate pace for 40 minutes a day reported half the number of sick days taken off from work than those who didn’t exercise at all. It is still cold in Cambridge, so the flu is still a threat on campus, and it seems that regular exercise is key to staying in the classroom and out of University Health Services.

This research should also be a wake-up call for Harvard’s administrators. There are no real outlets or motivators for students to get active, especially toward the end of semesters when intramurals have ended. There are gym classes, but only those who are very self-motivated attend those. In many liberal arts colleges across the nation, there is a physical educational requirement. Although Harvard does not necessarily need to add such a requirement, it might be time to offer outlets for exercise, such creating and facilitating student run groups, keeping gyms open later, and longer intramural periods.

This semester, Harvard students should rethink their exercise habits and how they could be affecting their mental health. An hour at the gym might be as good as an hour at the library, in terms of mental preparation. The health benefits are so great that students ought to engage in some sort of exercise regularly, and the University should help motivate students to do so as well. Hopefully there will be more students jogging along the Charles from now on and less cooped up in the Widener dungeon.

Fitness reviews say that, in general, the best elliptical trainers cost at least $1,000. If $1,000 is beyond your budget for an elliptical trainer, you still have some options, but experts say you shouldn't expect a low-end machine to offer the same flexibility and durability as more expensive elliptical trainers. That's most evident in the manufacturer warranty. On the higher-quality elliptical machines above, one-year warranties are standard, but less expensive models often only back their machines with a 90-day warranty.

Reviews like the Schwinn 418 (est $800) , which wins a couple of best-buy ratings. The Schwinn 418 has a flywheel design, like the Smooth elliptical trainers above, and the handlebars move, providing an upper body workout. Heart-rate sensors are located on the handgrips. There are 12 programs, a weight capacity of 275 pounds, and an 18-inch stride, which should be comfortable for most users. Schwinn offers a 15-year frame warranty, shorter than the lifetime frame warranties offered by Precor and Smooth, but reviews say the quality and durability of the Schwinn 418 are excellent for this price range. Compared to the higher-end Spirit XE 350, the Schwinn has eight resistance levels compared to 20 for the Spirit. The Spirit has a higher weight limit and a two-year labor warranty. Schwinn only gives you a six-month labor warranty.

However, we're read some recent complaints about manufacturing flaws with the Schwinn 418. Several owners posting comments to Amazon.com report that the Schwinn elliptical trainer broke in the same place -- that the welds holding the mast to the frame are too weak. Although the price is low, the six-month labor warranty and reports of the exact same durability problem gives us pause. Though it costs more, the Spirit XE 350 comes with a two-year labor warranty.

In this price range, TreadmillDoctor.com likes the NordicTrack Elite 1300, Epic 1000 and ProForm 21.0 (est $850) . All three of these elliptical machines are made by the same manufacturer, Icon Health and Fitness. We found the ProForm to be a bit easier to find in stores. This model has an 18-inch stride, gel handgrips on the handles and 12 programs. Its big innovation is that it includes a few video games you can play on the small console screen. You control the games with the handgrips. Reviews say this feature is pretty gimmicky, but the elliptical trainer as a whole is a good value. Unfortunately, the ProForm warranty is one of the worst in the industry -- only 90 days on parts and labor. The weight limit is 250 pounds.

The Fitness Quest Eclipse 1100 HR/A elliptical trainer (*est. $400) has an unusual one-year limited warranty on parts and labor. Blake Bissaillion from BuildingMuscle101.com recommends the Fitness Quest Eclipse, saying that its steel frame is sturdy and won't wobble even at higher speeds and that it can support up to 275 pounds. Bissaillion says the Fitness Quest elliptical trainer is lightweight and compact enough to be wheeled from room to room. The Fitness Quest 1100 HR/A has a 275-pound weight limit, ten preset programs and two heart-rate-controlled programs -- a large number for this budget price range. The heart-rate sensors are in the handgrips, which move to provide an upper body workout. This model uses a flywheel design like the Smooth and Schwinn elliptical trainers above, but the stride length is only 15 inches, which may be too short for tall individuals (as opposed to the Spirit XE ellipticals above, which have a 20-inch stride). We found some good owner comments for this model.

Other reviewers like the ProForm 900 (est $600) . Like the Fitness Quest above, the ProForm 900 has handlebars for an upper body workout and an included heart-rate monitor, located on the handgrips. This ProForm elliptical trainer has six exercise programs, but at additional cost, you can download more programs from the Internet. It also has a fan in the console to keep you cool. Although these extra features sound nice, reviews say such things are often gimmicky, especially when the machine itself isn’t built to last. Reviews warn that the ProForm elliptical trainer does not have the stability of higher-priced elliptical trainers, plus ProForm's standard warranty is very short -- only 90 days.

At TreadmillDoctor.com, editors highlight the Image 8.5 (*est. $400). This model is also made by Icon Health and Fitness, and it shares the same short 90-day warranty. This flywheel model has a 17.5-inch stride, movable handles for an upper body workout, and a handgrip heart-rate monitor.

If you've used an elliptical trainer at the gym, it was likely a higher-end commercial machine. Reviews say commercial machines are more expensive and feature-laden than most people need at home. However, Precor ranks highly in reviews for both its commercial and home elliptical trainers. The (*est. $2,700) is Precor's entry-level model, and the editors of Prevention magazine say it's one of the most durable on the market. The Precor elliptical trainer has four programs including an optional heart-rate monitor, 20 resistance levels, an incline that adjusts from 12 to 25 degrees, and a long, 19-inch stride. This makes it one of the largest home models, with a footprint of 75 x 30 inches. The Precor machine weighs 197 pounds. According to the manufacturer, Precor elliptical trainers don't have a weight limit, so they are appropriate for heavier individuals.

The Precor EFX 5.17i elliptical trainer has an accessory holder on the console for your water bottle or CD player. Precor comes standard with a child safety feature to prevent accidental startups, but you have to pay extra for the optional heart-rate monitor. The Precor EFX 5.17i elliptical trainer doesn't include an upper body workout, but step-up models do, including the (*est. $2,700) and the EFX 5.33 (*est. $3,800). However, these two models have a 20-degree fixed ramp, so if you like to adjust the incline while working out, you might opt for the EFX 5.17i instead. With Precor elliptical trainers, you must choose between an upper body workout and an adjustable incline.

We featured the Precor EFX 5.21 (*est. $3,700) in a previous version of this report, but chose to replace it with the EFX 5.17i, which is less expensive but has comparable features. For the extra money, the Precor EFX 5.21i gives you two extra workout programs, a slightly larger 13- to 30-degree incline, and an included heart-rate monitor. The only downside to Precor elliptical trainers (besides the high price) is the large size and weight (the very qualities that make them so stable), so make sure you have enough space.

Another higher-end option is the Life Fitness X3 elliptical trainer (*est. $3,000). This elliptical trainer has movable handlebars for an upper body workout and an interactive heart-rate monitor to help keep you in your target heart-rate zone. The Life Fitness elliptical trainer has 12 workouts, including a "My Workouts" section that stores weight, incline levels and progress for up to four workouts or people. However, experts at TreadmillDoctor.com say this model is overpriced for what you get, and in this price range, Precor is better.

If you're looking for a lot of features on a limited budget, reviewers like the Smooth CE 3.2 (est $1700). Experts say it's durable for the price and offers a full complement of features for the money. It has nine customizable programs, a 300-pound weight capacity, and comes with a wireless heart-rate monitor. Movable handlebars give your upper body a workout, but reviews especially like the pivoting foot pedals, which decrease ankle strain. One drawback: The stride length on the Smooth CE 3.2 is 16 inches, which may be too short for taller people. However, Smooth's step-up model, the CE 7.4 (est $2,500) has a 19-inch stride, equivalent to the Precor elliptical trainers above.

Smooth's elliptical trainers use a flywheel instead of rollers on a ramp for the leg movement, and thus, the user can’t adjust the incline. The machine's speed and resistance are based on the workout program, but these can be customized as you work out. This is an improvement over Smooth's former CE models, which didn't allow setting changes. The high-end Precor EFX 5.17 elliptical trainer (*est. $2,700), on the other hand, has an adjustable incline to vary your workout. (Reviews say a variable incline can help isolate different muscle groups.) Smooth elliptical trainers have a lifetime warranty on parts and a one-year labor warranty.

According to reviews at TreadmillDoctor.com, Spirit elliptical trainers are a great value right now; editors think that Spirit is actually underpricing its elliptical trainers. This manufacturer gets good reviews for its treadmills, but we didn't see as many reviews for its elliptical trainers. Both the Spirit XE 350 (*est. $1,450) and the Spirit XE 550 (*est. $1,750) have a long 20-inch stride and upper body handles. Articulated foot pedals reduce ankle stress. Twenty resistance levels and ten workout programs help vary your workout. Neither of these machines has an adjustable incline (a feature you're unlikely to see at this price level). Both models have heart-rate control, a fan and an accessory holder. Both machines include a lifetime warranty on the frame and brake system, plus five years on other parts. A two-year labor warranty is included, which is more generous than Smooth.

The Spirit XE 350 has a 350-pound user weight limit; the XE 550 has a 400-pound weight limit. Added features on the higher-end XE 550 include molded handgrips, a cushioned foot pad and a heart-rate "autopilot" feature, which varies the resistance automatically to keep you in your target heart-rate zone. The entry-level Spirit XE 150 (*est. $1,250) costs less, but doesn't have many heart-rate features, has a smaller display, a 300-pound weight limit and no adjustable foot pedals.

We highlighted the Vision Fitness 6200HRT elliptical trainer (*est. $1,500) in a previous version of this report. The manufacturer upgraded this model to the X6200HRT (*est. $2,000), which also gets some high scores in reviews. Like the Life Fitness elliptical trainer and Spirit XE 550 above, the Vision Fitness X6200HRT will automatically change resistance to maintain your target heart rate (sensors are located in the handgrips). The movable handles work your upper body, plus this model can fold up for storage.
If you have worked out on some of the heavy duty industrial models at your local gym, you probably know how easy it is to become hooked once you get your rhythm on these machines. For this reason, many people choose to incorporate elliptical trainers as part of their home workout routines. However, choosing an elliptical trainer can be a daunting task that may require a bit of patience.

You will be happy to know that elliptical trainers take up less space in the home, on average, than treadmills. Models vary widely when it comes to both features and price. You will find them starting at as low as a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, and when you are choosing your elliptical trainer, you will have to decide what it most important.

The first thing that most people will consider when choosing an elliptical machine is the cost, which is understandable, but should definitely not be the top concern when choosing an elliptical trainer. What you will need to do is choose a machine that has most or all or the features you need combined with quality and durability that is within the price range you set.

Since you are going to be using your elliptical trainer on a regular basis, you will need to visit local fitness shops in your area to test out the equipment. You can start by researching models you may be interested in online and then visiting your local fitness shop to test drive the ellipticals. This will let you know if the model you are interested in purchasing is comfortable. If the elliptical machine you purchase feels uncomfortable, you can be sure that you will using it as a coat rack instead of what it was designed for – exercise.
After trying out and deciding on a few elliptical trainers that feel comfortable, it is time to compare the features. If each machine has very similar features, then you should compare reviews and track records of the model you are considering. This can be done in the comfort of your home using the Internet or by consulting an expert.

Durability and quality construction are going to be top concerns when choosing your new elliptical trainer also. This is why it is extremely important to research brand that you are interested in before making the final decision. This means checking the specifications, such as weight limits. Most cheaper models will not be as durable as you like. Since you most likely will be investing a quite a bit into your new purchase, you want to be sure that it is going to be worth the money.
Keeping these considerations in mind will help you to choose the elliptical trainer that fits your needs best. Just remember to take your time and weigh your decision carefully before making your purchase.
